Creative Mind: Driving the Future

Russian creativity is unique.

Russia has always been an infinite source of great creative minds, inventors, artists and musicians who have been brought to this world over the course of several centuries. From the Russian writer Tolstoy, the Russian scientist Mendeleev and the artists of the Russian avant-garde art scene Kandinsky and Rodchenko right to the famous engineers Sikorsky and Korolev — they all created something that we cannot imagine our life without. And some things remain unchanged — Russian creativity keeps inspiring people around the world today.

Let’s not forget that 100 years ago Russia was considered to be a source of inspiration and everything new, exciting and progressive — Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, Sergei Eisenstein’s cinema, Stanislavski’s theatre and famous avant-garde artists Larionov and Malevich and, of course, discoveries made by Pavlov, Bekhterev and Mechnikov — this is only a small part of the endless list of remarkable achievements of the Great Russians.

That is how creativity, thinking outside-the-box, pioneering inventions and inspiring unpredictability became the main advantages of the Russians in the market of creative industries.

Nowadays, the share of creative industries in the economy of Russia’s large cities can be compared to today’s numbers in Europe’s cities. For example, 19% of the market in Moscow belongs to creative economy and though the number in Saint Petersburg is a bit lower — 12% — it still remains very impressive. Moreover, today we can find creative communities formed not only in cities but also in different regions of Russia.

Join us in the Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai and you will hear stories about Russia’s scientific and cultural heritage carefully preserved over the course of the last centuries. Moreover, you will also see works of the brightest minds behind the latest cutting-edge technologies made in Russia and aimed at making our future better.

Our cultures and societies are all different, but there is something crucial that we all share. It is the human brain, a true miracle that makes us who we are, connects our minds, and creates our future. It is the science of the brain that will bring us the most important discoveries of the 21st century. These discoveries will have a deep impact on our consciousness and our minds, and will transform our lives. Hence “The Mechanics of Wonder”, an invitation to a journey through the inner workings of the human brain — and a tribute to this masterpiece of the Universe. Our brain teaches us an important lesson: billions of nerve cells, as peculiar as they are, come together to build the mind, which is sustainable, mobile, and presents us with endless opportunities. Nature can do it, and so can we. Hence the “Mechanics of Wonder,” a call for human cooperation for the sake of our common future.

2021 was officially declared the International Year of Creative Economy by the UN! Come and you will see with your own eyes what Russia has to offer.

Russia Pavilion hosted Russia: mindful brain at EXPO 2020 Dubai

Russia: mindful brain forum has gathered the leading neuroscientists and contemporary philosophers to discuss the future of neuroscience and the development of neurotechnologies. The conversation has extended the theme of the Russia Pavilion main exposition “Mechanics of Wonder” created by Simpateka Entertainment Group and dedicated to the human brain.

Moderated by famous Russian journalist Vladimir Pozner, the discussion touched those ideas that were once believed to be impossible — absolute memory, mind-controlled neural interfaces or radical intelligence enhancement.

The key speakers such as neurobiologist Konstantin Anokhin, Director of the Institute for Advanced Brain Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University; cognitive scientist Tatiana Chernigovskaya, Director of the Institute for Cognitive Studies; developer of neural interface technologies Alexander Kaplan, Head of the Neurophysiology and Neural Interfaces Lab, Lomonosov Moscow State University; Pavel Balaban, Head of the Cellular Neurobiology of Learning Laboratory at the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Moscow; philosopher Vadim Vasiliev, Director of the Moscow Center for Consciousness Studies; Rafael Yuste, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director, NeuroTechnology Center, Columbia University (USA); neuroscientist Katrin Amunts, Scientific Research Director of the Human Brain Project (DE) have reflected on the most up-to-date questions.

Tatiana Chernigovskaya along with the other speakers discussed the necessity of changing the paradigm in the research of the brain, moving towards seeing the features of the brain that could be associated with a different, “baroque” view — multidimensional, moving perspective, dealing with irrational and creative objects and subjects.

As Vladimir Pozner stated in the conclusion, if the 20th century is known for its discovery of the atom, then the 21st century might be known as the century of the brain.
